Sign in to your account. As of helm v2. Downgrading to v2. I thought I was experiencing the same problem, but it turned out I just had an old delete but not purgedrelease hanging around. This is a side-effect of fixing issues around upgrading releases that were in a bad state. Is there an edge case here that we failed to catch?
Check helm list -a as tcolgate mentioned, perhaps also explaining how to reproduce it would also be helpful to determine if it's an uncaught edge case or a bug.
I want to know how we get into the situation where all releases are in a failed state. Ohh, the duplicate release name deployments? That I'm not sure, I get it quite often. Usually the duplicates are just annoying when looking at whats deployed, this was the first time we had a hard issue with them, and normally we don't upgrade the ingress controller as we were in this case.
I am still on K8S 1.
Same here using 2. The first attempt of a release was failed. I'm experiencing the same problem. Combined with that leaves no option for automated idempotent deployments without some scripting to workaround. Installing it now. Error: release foo failed: deployments. The behaviour you are experiencing seems correct to me. The deploy cannot succeed because helm would have to "take ownership" of an API object that it did not own before.
It does make sense to be able to upgrade a FAILED release, if the new manifest is actually correct and doesn't content with any other resources in the cluster.
I will have to delete this to be able to continue to deploy, let me know if there is anything I can do to help debug this.
I think we should rename the issue, as it is more about the duplicates? I actually have another duplicate release on my cluster, if you have any command for me to run to help debug that?
Enable third-party updates
Let me know! The warnings are normal for our chart. The errors are interesting because one of our subcharts has a pvc. This does make our CI pipeline difficult to upgrade. We're on 2. In previous Helm versions, upgrade --install allowed us to only patch the change that broke the full release without having to remove all the resources. Helm is the owner of all resources involved at all times here -- the resource is only marked FAILED because --wait didn't succeed to wait for all resources to be in a good state.
I assume the same will happen if a pod is a bit too slow to start and in many similar cases. Thanks -- that clears it up. Actually realized we were only hitting it when we had no successful release to begin with. Important: If you are currently running the cert-manger whose version is older than v0. The reason is that when Helm upgrades Rancher, it will reject the upgrade and show error messages if the running Rancher app does not match the chart template used to install it. You'll need to decide if you want Configuration Manager to automatically manage the third-party WSUS signing certificate using a self-signed certificate, or if you need to manually configure the certificate. If you don't have a requirement to use PKI certificates, you can choose to automatically manage the signing certificates for third-party updates. The WSUS certificate management is done as part of the sync cycle and gets logged in the wsyncmgr. If you need to manually configure the certificate, such as needing to use a PKI certificate, you'll need to use either System Center Updates Publisher or another tool to do so.
Enable third-party updates on the clients in the client settings. The setting sets the Windows Update agent policy for Allow signed updates for an intranet Microsoft update service location. The certificate management logging is seen in updatesdeployment. Run these steps for each custom client setting you want to use for third-party updates.

Already on GitHub? Sign in to your account. Using helm upgrade --install is a nice way to install or upgrade depending on if the release exists. But it looks like there's a bug in the logic; its not handling failed installs.
In my case the first install failed; then a subsequent attempt wasn't even made as it crashes out immediately. Maybe if the last release failed then helm upgrade --install should delete it and install again?
This was intentional by design of Basically, diffing against a failed deployment caused undesirable behaviour, most notably this long list of bugs:. If your initial release ends up in a failed state, we recommend purging the release via helm delete --purge foo and trying again. After a successful initial release, any subsequent failed releases will be ignored, and helm will do a diff against the last known successful release. Now that being said, it might be valuable to not perform a diff when no successful releases have been deployed.
The experience would be the same as if the user ran helm install for the very first time in the sense that there would be no "current" release to diff against. I'd be a little concerned about certain edge cases though. The suggested fix seems completely untenable in an automated system. I definitely don't want everything invoking helm to have to know about "if first release fails, delete and retry". For one, most of my tooling isn't aware if it's an install or upgrade, or if it's the first time or th time, it's almost always just running helm upgrade --install.
I'd also like to call out that I commented on the original PR comment asking specifically about this case. The old behavior was better for this case.
I agree with chancez. This makes upgrade --install non-idempotent for a common occurrence. Hooks work better when they are idempotent Users are free to build error handling and non-idempotent behavior around helm.

What other edge-cases are we concerned about? My local development would go much smoother if I could make helm upgrade -i be idempotent even against Failed releases for at least some combination of arguments. My use case is when I have a script of many releases that I know I want to get up to start a local development env.
This might be analogous to the --replace flag for helm install. Note that --replace is one of only two flags from helm install that is missing in helm upgradethe other being --name-template.
