The Kims - mother and father Chung-sook and Ki-taek, and their young adult offspring, son Ki-woo and daughter Ki-jung - are a poor family living in a shabby and cramped half basement apartment in a busy lower working class commercial district of Seoul.
Without even knowing it, they, especially Mr. Kim, literally smell of poverty. Often as a collective, they perpetrate minor scams to get by, and even when they have jobs, they do the minimum work required.
Ki-woo is the one who has dreams of getting out of poverty by one day going to university. Despite not having that university education, Ki-woo is chosen by his university student friend Min, who is leaving to go to school, to take over his tutoring job to Park Da-hye, who Min plans to date once he returns to Seoul and she herself is in university.
The Parks are a wealthy family who for four years have lived in their modernistic house designed by and the former residence of famed architect Namgoong. While Mr. Written by Huggo. What an amazing film! Clearly an essay on the class divide. Writing lovable but nasty people is tough, but perfectly executed here. They quite clearly cross the line, and when I mean "they" I mean bother the working class and the upper class.
You could easily argue that "parasite" refers to one family trying to suck another family dry. Or that the upper class is draining the labour of the lower class, and expecting them to be grateful about it too!
There is also something about the American Indian theme, a metaphor for dying cultural traditions which are being replaced by modernity? Nature is dog eat dog? Or is it a homage to an "idyllic" past where Native American culture was relatively classless? Either way a must watch if you can handle subtitles! Sign In. Jobless, penniless, and, above all, hopeless, the unmotivated patriarch, Ki-taek, and his equally unambitious family--his supportive wife, Chung-sook; his cynical twentysomething daughter, Ki-jung, and his college-age son, Ki-woo--occupy themselves by working for peanuts in their squalid basement-level apartment.
Then, by sheer luck, a lucrative business proposition will pave the way for an insidiously subtle scheme, as Ki-woo summons up the courage to pose as an English tutor for the teenage daughter of the affluent Park family. Now, the stage seems set for an unceasing winner-take-all class war.

Rafer Guzman. If the movie is a Rorschach of who you identify as parasite and host, it's a test you're just as likely to fail; a filmgoing experience that refuses to fit into any box, and forces viewers to breathe the dangerous air outside of it too.
Leah Greenblatt. Let's just say that by "Parasite's" conclusion, what started out as a comedy of manners has become a furious snarl of rage and his most arresting social satire yet.The blurry lines between thrillers and horrors can ruffle the feathers of many a film buff.
In the case of Bong Joon-Ho's Oscar winner Parasitethe distinction can prepare viewers for what to expect. At first glance, the bleak trailer and creepy title suggest that it's going to be a classic horror film with monsters and spooks. But watching the movie, I surprisingly found myself laughing through it instead of getting scared by it. While my brain is pretty broken from watching too many horror showsI can objectively say that Parasite isn't all that conventionally scary save for a few gory moments.
And yet, it's pretty chilling. That's because the film is really more of a psychological thriller, where the terrors are slow burns as opposed to freaky jump scares.
If you've been kind of, sort of, ignoring the movie out of fear, you may be rethinking your stance now that it won the Oscar for best picture.
If that's the case, here's what you need to know before you hit "rent"! And FYI, we won't ruin any big plot twists. According to an article from the Burlington County Library System, psychological thrillers "emphasize the unstable or delusional mental and emotional conditions of the characters and focus on the devious depths of the human mind.
The movie's key players are the Kims, a poor family seeking employment. Despite being unqualified for their jobs, they scam their way into working for the affluent Parks. They even resort to poisoning and framing other employees. When their secret almost gets exposed, the Kims engage in torture, truly believing they can get away with their wrongdoing. Their desperation crumbles into madness in the movie's bloody climax at the Parks' birthday party for their son, where multiple bloody murders take place.
Parasite carefully dissects its characters' fraying mental states, allowing us to understand what realistic forces can drive a person down a psychopathic road.
That's definitely scary, but it's a subtler and deeper kind of fright. Parasite is not only a psychological thriller but also a social one. The mental aspect of the film certainly informs the political one. We intimately understand why the Kims are so anxious and desperate.
It all boils down to the fear and stigma around poverty. Parasite is considerably reminiscent of Get Outwhich director Jordan Peele considers a social thriller. Peele contends that no matter what horrifying things happen on screen, the real monster there is society. Instead of racial prejudice, it's economic inequality that's the scariest thing about Parasite — how it drives disparaged people who live out the daily horrors of poverty to find a way out by any means necessary.
This desperate chase for financial stability eventually leads to the gory showdown between the Kims and Moon-kwang's family. Even with all the bloodshed in the third act, the most insidious thing the movie shows is how the rich ignore and dehumanize the poor. Parasite illustrates the physicality of poverty, especially through the bugs inhabiting the Kims' home, the flood that causes sewage to squirt out their toilet, and even the smell that Mr.
Park ascribes to Mr. But no matter how clean and polished the Parks are, you sense that there's something rotten about them. They live in blissful ignorance and use their money to distinguish themselves from the poor. They quietly voice their disdain toward those with less, yet the impoverished end up suffering the most. The Kims aren't saints, but you can't say that they don't face their fair share of battles in Parasite.
Why Parasite Fits the Psychological Thriller Genre According to an article from the Burlington County Library System, psychological thrillers "emphasize the unstable or delusional mental and emotional conditions of the characters and focus on the devious depths of the human mind.
