From commercial pool chemical monitoring systems to DIY test kits, there are plenty of pool monitoring solutions available. Choosing the best swimming pool monitoring system is a matter of your specific needs. If you are monitoring a commercial swimming pool or aquatic center that requires regular maintenance, you should opt for an automatic pool chemical monitoring set up. If you are just trying to keep your pool clean at home, then you might be able to get by with something simpler.
Here, we explain 4 ways to monitor a swimming pool:. Automatic pool chemical monitoring systems are the best choice for larger pools, spas, and aquatic centers that get a lot of traffic. These systems typically include sensors and commercial pool chemical controllers for automatic adjustment of chlorine and other chemicals.
A pool chemical controller gathers sensor data to calculate the optimal amount of chlorine or pool stabilizer. The ORP readings are used to adjust chlorine and cyanuric acid, while the calculated pH readings are used to determine dosages of muriatic acid, soda ash, and other compounds.
Commercial pool chemical controllers can remove the need for constant testing and maintenance, reducing the hassle of operating a large pool or spa. Nonetheless, the convenience of an electronic pool chemical tester appeals to you. Several companies now offer smart pool monitoring devices, which use water quality sensors and wireless technology to monitor pool water quality.
Additionally, some companies will even ship you pre-measured chemicals straight to your door. Prefer the do it yourself approach? Some users prefer to take their own measurements because it provides flexibility, rather than a one size fits all approach.
You can adjust for the specific features of your pool like salt water chlorinators or fiberglass pools and recalibrate your sensors whenever you like. In this case, there are two main ways to monitor pool water quality in order to determine which chemicals you need to purchase and add to your pool. The first is using an electronic pH meter and electronic ORP meter.
The advantage of using a meter is that you will obtain more precise results more quickly compared with a test kit. Many meters accept a BNC connector, which means that they can be used with sensors from different manufacturers. This is important to keep in mind, because while meters keep working for many years, sensors typically need to be replaced every year.
Smart sensors reduce ownership cost by harnessing the computing power of your smart phone. Pool test kits are a simple yet effective method for monitoring pool chemistry and making adjustments. Most pool water test kits are visually based: color changes indicate changes in pool chemistry.
Some pool water test kits include pool test strips that you can dip directly into pool water. Alternatively, liquid test kits include droppers of color indicating chemicals and vials that you can use for mixing the solutions with pool water. Using a pool test kit to monitor water quality may be more labor intensive, but it is certainly the most cost effective option. No matter which of these pool chemical monitoring systems you choose, maintaining well balanced water chemistry is essential.
Careful monitoring allows pool owners and operators to keep their pools safe and clean all season — or all year — long. Previous Next. View Larger Image. Ready to start monitoring?Finding traditional pool products bland and uninspired—think clunky chlorine floaters and boxed equipment sets—Sutro partnered with Enlisted to create a beautiful, intuitive smart pool monitor and brand experience worthy of the home.
A home pool is a luxury. The day-to-day investment of time and energy in pool ownership is less so. Sutro and Enlisted collaborated to bring this innovative product to life, as well as refresh and elevate the mobile experience and overall Sutro brand identity.
User persona research uncovered that Sutro customers have a savvy design eye. They curate beautiful, well-made products in their homes and naturally, want their pool accessories to feel thoughtful and appealing. Enlisted created a holistic visual language—with rich shades of turquoise and pops of gold—to deliver on this desire by evoking a luxurious resort feel. For the monitor itself, close collaboration between design, engineering, and manufacturing ensured the development of a premium-feeling product that would never be structurally compromised by living immersed in water.
The woven nylon tether docks the monitor to the pool in a clean, no-fuss manner, and the twist-lock cap and monitor core are intuitive and ergonomic for a wide range of users.
A gold filter plate adds an extra touch of sophistication. For the packaging, Enlisted delivered a modular design made from sustainable materials. Industrial Design. Sutro: Love Your Pool Again.Maintaining a swimming pool can be daunting; in addition to vacuuming, cleaning, and backwashing the filter, and skimming for leaves and bugs, you have to make sure the water is chemically balanced, not just for health reasons but to prevent damage to your pool structure and filter components.
All you have to do is drop it in your pool for real-time water analysis, temperature readings, and chemical dosage recommendations on your smartphone. The monitor worked wonderfully in testing and I love the historical chemical and temperature level charts, but it's a pricey gadget that must be replaced every two years.
The pHin comes with a water monitor, a Wi-Fi bridge, a tether for attaching the monitor to your pool ladder, and a calibration kit. You can subscribe to one of several optional chemical plans. The chemicals come in color-coded pods that make it easy to apply the recommended dosage without having to measure. You can use the pHin PSOD Professional Service On Demand option in the app to hook up with a pool care company in your area to have the pool opened, closed, and serviced by a qualified professional.
According to the company, the monitor itself only has a lifespan of months before it will have to be replaced. You can continue to use the pHin even if you choose not to pay the yearly fee and you'll receive temperature and basic alerts when chemical levels are skewed, but you'll no longer receive dosage recommendations, and when its battery and internal sensors die which they willyou're out of luck.
The monitor is white and measures It has a water drop-shaped LED at the top and a removable compartment on its base. Removing the bottom piece reveals the sensor, which collects data including chlorine, pH, and bromine levels, as well as water temperature. The monitor also has a Bluetooth radio that is used to connect to the bridge. The bridge measures 3. In addition to the above-mentioned Bluetooth radio, it has a Wi-Fi radio that connects to your home router, a LAN port for wired connectivity, and a reset button.
The calibration kit consists of a calibration card and 25 test strips that measure chlorine, pH, hardness calciumtotal alkalinity, and cyanuric acid. When you first start the app, you are prompted to dip a test strip into the water and place it on a marked area of the calibration card.
The app will then use your phone's camera to take a snapshot of the reading and use it to analyze your water's chemical makeup and match it to the sensor's readings. You'll be prompted to take a new reading once a month to make sure the sensor is calibrated. The mobile app for Android and iOS lets you check chemical levels at a glance and supplies notifications when it's time to add more. The home screen displays a large circle that tells you if the water is balanced or not, the water temperature, and any required actions, such as adding chemicals or taking a calibration reading.
Tapping the circle takes you to a page with the same circle, only smaller, and instructions for any actions. For example, if it's time to add chlorine, tap the chlorine notification and follow the directions.
If you're subscribed to the chemical plan, add the color-coded chemical pods as directed. If it's time for your monthly calibration, follow the instructions to dip a test strip in the water and enter the results into your phone, as mentioned above. Tapping Water History in the upper right corner opens a screen with historical charts that show pH levels, sanitizer chlorine levels, and water temperature. Here you can see the latest readings for Total Alkalinity, Hardness, and Cyanuric Acid levels, as per your latest test strip readings.
If you want to take advantage of the pHin network of pool service providers, tapping the Service icon in the lower right corner launches a web page where you can request pool cleaning, repair, leak detection, and a host of other services.
Tapping the three bar icon in the upper left corner launches a main menu where you can return to the home screen, search for a service provider, email the pHin support team, check your inventory of chemicals if you're on a subscription planand change network and account settings. To install the pHin, I started by downloading the app and creating an account. Once the account was created, I followed the in-app instructions to scan the QR code on the back of the bridge and plug it in to an indoor outlet within close proximity to the pool.
I chose my SSID, entered my password, and waited around 20 seconds for the bridge setup to complete. To prepare the monitor for its first use, I twisted and removed the bottom end cap and held it up to the water drop LED momentarily until the LED flashed blue, indicating the monitor was ready to connect. I removed a small clear plastic cap that covered the sensor, dumped the fluid that preserved the sensor during shipping, and placed the cap in a slot next to the sensor.
I then replaced the end cap and put the monitor in my pool.Traditionally, water chemistry is measured about one time per week. This certainly helps to monitor the health of your water, but we, at pHin, have developed a smarter approach. There are many environmental factors that affect water chemistry like: usage, weather, water temperature, sunlight exposure, etc. Customers who have followed the guidance in the pHin app, report that their water has never looked clearer, nor has it been easier to maintain.
When you buy your pHin monitor, you get your first year of the pHin Monitoring Service for free. The Monitoring Service includes:. Read More Reviews. Automatic App Notifications Relax and enjoy your water. You never need to worry about overchlorinated or out of balance water again. The Monitoring Service includes: Water history charts Easy, accurate chemical dosing directions Alerts for when attention is needed Tests for total alkalinity, total hardness, and cyanuric acid monthly or as needed Shareable water data for in-person help or to order new chemicals at your favorite pool store Unlimited pHin monitor replacement warranty.

With the dog days of summer on their way, many of you will find yourself seeking refuge from the brutal heat beneath the cool caress of the waves. Sounds great, right? Sutro hopes to change that. According to TechCrunchthe premise is simple. The Sutro is an internet-connected device that floats in the pool and measures important data for pool owners.
In theory, the device will make it easier for users to keep their pools at the perfect sanitation level for swimming, without the skin and eye irritation that comes from improper chlorine levels. On the other hand, there is still a lot left unknown. According to TechCrunch, Sutro co-founder Ravi Kurani talked about the problems the company had to overcome, including weak Wi-Fi signals in the backyard away from the home. The product is catered toward a higher-income audience, however.
Sutro plans to release a second version of the device at some point in the future that can automatically release the necessary chemicals to keep the pool levels regulated.
In addition to pools, the Sutro is also supposed to work with spas and hot tubs. Although the high price point is prohibitive for many people, the Sutro serves a market that has not been targeted often in the past.
