It is a proprietary protocol built by Microsoft to let users graphically control a remote computer. The ultimate goal of both protocols is to provide graphical access to a remote computer, displaying the desktop as well as communicating keystrokes and mouse actions.
A user operating the local computer actually triggers all events, launches the applications and observers the results on the remote one. Both technologies use direct peer-to-peer communication. It means that the local user computer directly connects to the remote computer. In all cases the server parts for both technologies has to be configured to enable access and to set up credentials to login. RDP logs in a remote user to the server computer by effectively creating a real desktop session on the server computer including a user profile. It works in the same way as if the user had logged in to the physical server directly.
RDP can support multiple remote users logged in to the same server that completely unaware of each other.

It makes RDP a good choice for using the same remote server for multiple users at the same time. VNC connects a remote user to the computer itself by sharing its screen, keyboard and mouse. Consequently, when several users including the one operating the real physical monitor and keyboard connect to the same server they see the same thing and they type on the same keyboard.
It makes VNC a good choice for technical support when the remote user can see what the local user does and can take control when needed to help. Popular WEB based screen sharing technologies like WebEx or GotoMeeting provide similar kinds of functionality using cloud based servers to maintain communication. This can be both a Pro and a Con. It sometimes can be a little slow. It can also be set up so that you have to start it when someone needs to connect. This is the way we have used it however you have to remember to close it when done.
That doesn't always happen. I like Teamviewer since it can be used without actually installing a program. It is usually started by the support person.
I live in the US and have supported friends as far away as Germany and it usually is just like being in front of their computer. In both cases my experience is that whatever the support person is doing shows on the monitor at the other end. If you are after a way to offer support to end users and cost is not the deciding issue then either product will work or you can look at other comercial products like LogMeIn or Baumgar spelling?
If you are looking at unattended remote control then UltraVNC or one of the comercial products are probably your best choice.
If you are looking for occasional remote support and don't want to spend money then I would go with TeamView.Right now when the user sends a ticket we try a remote assist. A lot of the time, the user doesn't see it or has stepped away from their desk. It also doesn't run nearly as fast as we would like when using remote assistance.
What I am looking to find out is what is the best solution to this issue? The best way for us to connect securely and quickly without having any interaction from the user. Is there really THAT many more useful utilities with team viewer? Or would a VNC client work just as well? I appreciate any feedback on these. I believe that team viewer is probably our best choice, but when it comes down to it, I'm not sure.
The Dannon Project is an IT service provider. Remote Utilities offers a free 10 machine license. You need 15, so maybe you could use the free 10 and purchase 5 more? I've used TeamViewer quite a bit personally and I like using it. You won't be able to use the free version for this though. I haven't used VNC in quite some time myself, but it's easy enough to use.
We use LogMeIn and it works well, no end user assistance required. The only thing I don't like is if the computer you are remoting into has multiple monitors, you have to toggle between them. RDP takes all the screens and consolidates them into one but you lock the computer from the end user so they can't give input if you may need some.

This is the key point I think. If your connections will only ever be made on network or via VPN then VNC will meet the requirements you describe fast, secure etc.
The benefit of VNC is that all of your data stays on your network, which is what you would expect if you planned only ever to connect over your network.
